Learn Collocations

"You shall know a word by the company it keeps."

- J.R. Firth

What are Collocations?

Stop memorizing single words. Learn chunks.

Have you ever tried to memorize long lists of single words? It is very difficult! Even if you know many words, you might not sound natural when you speak.

This is because native speakers use chunks of words. A collocation is a combination of words that naturally go together. For example, we say "fast food", not "quick food". We say "commit a crime", not "do a crime".

When you learn collocations instead of single words, your brain remembers them easier. You will make fewer mistakes, and you will become fluent much faster. Always look at the context of a new word!
